Works made in 2009

  • Cipher was named for Kyoko after she described a framed print she saw in my studio.

  • Blast Off was made for a 50th birthday gift.

  • Bora refers to a northerly wind.

  • The Almanac Series were inspired by childhood memories of looking at images in old year books, finding a variety of subjects from farming to knitting, stationery to plumbing.

  • Allotment is from a happy time organising my planting at a shared garden and where I met Hiromi.

  • Cowley Boogie Woogie I & II reference the area of Cowley Road in Oxford, taking buses, crossing roads and dodging pavement traffic.

  • Retaining Wall was the first of four images and refers to the blocks holding tight the left edge & bottom section.

  • Set Free was when the wall was removed.

  • Away is inverted and released like a hot air balloon.

  • Temple is a quiet piece.
